3rd International Olive Oil Award - Zurich 2004
In spring 2004 - in the context of the annual Olive Oil Award - the objective sensory evaluation of virgin olive oils from the harvest 03/04 was performed by the sensory panel for olive oils from the University of Applied Sciences Waedenswil.Alltogether 104 olive oils have participated in the tasting. First of all - the overall-intensity was evaluated, in order to categorize the oils as "mild", "medium" or "intense".
According to the regulations of the EC and the IOOC (International Olive Oil Council) for the organoleptic evaluation of olive oil, the classification by categories, as there are "extra virgin", "virgin", etc., was determined. Further on, a description of characteristic attributes was carried out for each individual olive oil.
101 of the 104 announced olive oils corresponded to the official requirements for the category "extra virgin" and where subsequently considered for the award. An overview of these olive oils is available here as well as a list of the corresponding points of sale.
On the basis of this evaluation - and in addition, due to the olfactory and gustatory evaluation of harmony - there where alltogether 22 "extra virgin" olive oils awarded in the categories "mild, "medium" and "intense".
Olive oils that where awarded with a "Golden Olive" or a "Silver Olive", therefore correspond at least to the requirements of the category of "extra virgin" olive oils and in addition have to show an extrodinary harmony for nose and palate.
Two olive oils where honoured with the highest possible award and received a "Golden Olive". For 20 other oils - 4 of them out of biological production - "Silver Olives" where awarded. The lists of awarded oils - splitted into the categories "Gold" and "Silver" (and seperatedly "Bio") is available here.
On the occasion of the Gourmesse 2004, that took place from October 08, 2004 until October 11, 2004 in Zurich (www.gourmesse.ch), the same olive oils, which took part in the sensory evaluation in spring, during the "3rd International Olive Oil Award - Zurich 2004", where ranked by the consumer - regarding to their popularity. The four most popular olive oils will be awarded with the "OLIO" 2004 of the Edition Salz & Pfeffer.
